Designer Drugs (Michael Vincent Patrick and Theodore Paul Nelson) lead lifestyles of the rich and famous, but are really just poor boys who love helicopters and pop banger music…and a few other things that will not be noted. Currently, Designer Drugs is releasing new material with Iheartcomix Records. They’ve also been found partying on the couch at the Iheartcomix office.

With one member attending med school and the other drinking whiskey across the globe, to keep from going crazy last year – the DD boys produced over 23 remixes and DJ’d over 100 shows around the world. This year, to keep from going crazy, Designer Drugs is putting the focus on original material while continuing to tour the galaxy and party harder than ever.

Most recently, Designer Drugs released their single “ZOMBIES! / Back Up In This” on Iheartcomix Records with Remixes by Nadastrom, Don Rimini, Le Castle Vania and Bird Peterson. Designer Drugs has also completed remixes for labels such as Kitsune, Dim Mak, Fools Gold, Warner Brothers, Ministry Of Sound, Hail Social, Iamsound, Etc Etc, Coco Machette and Calamity Jane for artists such as Little Boots, The Veronicas, Thieves Like Us, Treasure Fingers, Mariah Carey, Jupiter One, Heart’s Revolution, Mission Control, Hail Social, and IAMX.

Both members of Designer Drugs are mentally controlled by ELLE REX (www.ellerex.net), photographer of NYC’s sleaziest and most entertaining electro party – RUFF CLUB. DJ/producers Andrew Ross and Scott Seewhale came together thanks to a shared obsession with early Chicago and Detroit classics, but do not get it twisted – Nacho Lovers is no tribute act. The duo tore down Jack’s House only to rebuild it brick by brick as a cramped Toronto apartment with way too many records. They spent the past year locked inside, cooking up original tracks that meld vintage acid synths with the propulsive thump of modern techno and house, all brought to life with an untamed, underage house party energy. These whiz kids know their history, but Nacho Lovers is the sound of underground dance music right now.

Let’s just call it a coming of age story.

DRUMATIX SIX - NEIGHBOURHOOD THREAT

DRUMATIX SIX was born in the Steel City; his papa was a Steel man. His style of electro-industrial music was sculpted at an early age by his hometown of Hamilton’s industrial landscape of burning smoke stacks and flashing lights. He has been praised as being “better than most of the electro you can find coming out on wax from internationally respected labels” ~ Exclaim Magazine

Drumatix Six’s latest EP Neighbourhood Threat is being released on Intellegenix Records. During the recording of this album Drumatix Six experimented with new ways to shape his sounds, and build textures of noise over the music, creating rhythm out of discord. The album features guest vocals by ProCon’s Countess Christsmasher on the title track Neighbourhood Threat, as well as Statia on Unholy.

Drumatix Six is the moniker chosen by Aaron Joseph Cunningham. Aaron’s musical roots started in punk. During high school he formed and played bass for Punk band Sector Seven. Drumatix Six was introduced to electronic music during the heady days of Toronto’s early rave scene and traded his bass guitar for a TR-606 DRUMATIX and started programming his first electro beats. Feeling dispossessed by the fluffy techno and house he was hearing at raves, he sought new sounds and found solace in the electro coming out of Detroit. Bringing these electro records back to Toronto and Hamilton he was met by much resistance from the techno hierarchy of that era. However he persevered and became an electro pioneer in clubs around Ontario playing at his own nights and trying to sway the crowds away from the largely techno and house sounds pumping threw the clubs at that time. In 1999 through a twist of fate and one mixed tape handed in to a record store, he was asked to play an opening slot for Dj Digital and was also introduced to Intellegenix record label owner Cryo. Cryo and Drumatix became instant allies and soldier for the electro onslaught that was soon to come, organizing shows with acts like dj Godfather, Legowelt, and Orgue Electronique.

A few years back some personal hardships left Drumatix Six in a bad place with no ability to work on his true love of writing new rhythms and soundscapes. Never one to go down without a fight, he overcame these battles and rose triumphantly. Stronger and wiser than ever before, he rebuilt his studio and started recording his new EP Neighbourhood Threat for Intellegenix, as well as producing songs for other artists such as Toronto’s all girl Goth band Alectrona. Drumatix six is expanding his interest in industrial by forming a band with Slovenia’s MC Flasher, called Neon Vision and producing their first demo. Always thinking of the future, Drumatix Six’s plans are to use his knowledge of electronics, rhythms and timbres to help produce other new and upcoming artist regardless of genre in his new studio, Street Thunders Studio.

With Neighbourhood Threat, and a long list of remixes and production projects and experiments currently on the go, Drumatix Six is set to make his dent in the world’s sonic electro landscape.

John Roman is quickly becoming one of my favourite music providers, recently impressing Brodinski with his soon to be released Nadastrom remix. His recent attention is no accident, and not the result of neck tattoos or scene frenzy.

John Roman is, in its purist form, a musician. Through his orchestration and fusion of sampling, synths, and compelling percussion, Roman begs a fidget-worn dance floor to pick itself up by the bootstraps and kick it!

Ask Paul Revered or Gavin Whelehan of PSDO!NMFO what inspired their joint project, and you might hear responses such as: "For the money!" or "Think of all the pussy we'll get!" Dig deeper, and their intentions might come across akin to the likes of Weird Al Yankovich, or Frank Zappa! At the end of the day, the men of PSDO!NMFO agree, they know what the kids want.

Bred in the all-aged rave scene of the nineties and a hardcore love of non-pop hip hop, Gavin dreamed of sitting before keyboards, and engineering software, twisting knobs and depressing buttons to excite the teams of dancing bodies he'd joined every week. Working with demo versions of entry level consumer production software, Whelehan (aka WhiteHawk) realized he'd found his niche! Now producing soundtracks for television, film, and radio, Gavin's spare time is spent on PSDO!NMFO, another project called Fantasy Math Club with life long friend Craig Marshall, and teaming up with Toronto favourites, Mansion on their debut releases.

Paul Revered, also sharing Gavin's party history went the way of the pen. Interning for years on the now legendary Power Move radio show, working the promotion side of hip hop record labels, and concerts, and mingling with industry artists and DJs, his aspirations where set on joining their ranks as an MC, known as Take-One. After a move to spoken word, for what he calls "having no appeal as a rapper," Revered returned to the idea of recording raps after writing a satire on contemporary blog electro, and enlisted Gavin to produce it, Blow It Up was released, and PSDO!NMFO born.

WhiteHawk handles most of the production and engineering, Revered layers on performance and arrangement, and DJs on the duo's behalf. Together they are PSDO!NMFO, the patriarchal representatives of the Toronto promotion and management co-operative, UNDEADISCO. With La Familia at their backs, WhiteHawk at the helm, and Revered killing a bottle of whiskey in the bird's nest, these dance pirates will take your booty, and turn you out!

Simply put, spinning records is more then just a trend, for The Frandiscos, it’s a lifetime of heart and soul.

Jona and Andrew pride themselves on their vast musical influences stemming from Nine Inch Nails, to Soulwax, Daft Punk and Basement Jaxx. And from years of collecting music, the boys tote crates of records with them each time they spin at The Social, Wrongbar, Shallow Groove Lounge or the Annex Wreckroom (to name a few locations).

There is a new mix to get your hands on, and EP in the making. You can expect nothing but greatness from the brotherhood of The FranDiscos. Keep an ear out for what is to follow as this local Toronto talent, apply their craft for hearing sounds within sounds, to their music-knowledge while ‘rinsing it out’ for a crowd that’s eager to dance!

Kirsten Iversen, better known to her peers as Kiki, or Keeks for short, crawled out of the bedroom as a dj and threw the legendary Juicy parties at the turn of the century. These parties, thrown by a motley crew of female djs, had the right ingredients to entice people of all walks to get down. They were legendary parties because they were the first in Toronto to be openly pro-queer while being very appealing at the same time to straights. And, to be honest, this way of seeing Juicy was not even a consideration at the time; it was all about the party. Reclaiming the party is what Le Freak and family did at the ElMo every month.

Venues are tough in this city. This city in general lacks a proper sound system, Thymeless has a good system, but you don't see that kind of low end system making its ways into many of the venues.

if you ever go to party anywhere else, you notice a kind of dedication to the sound that we just don't have in this city

I love advertisements and marketing agents. And I really like the idea that marketing agents are watching us on all of these social utilities. My goal I suppose would be that Miley Cyrus starts promoting noise shows in church basesments. I feel like I would have then accomplished my goal. I don't see anything wrong necessarily with consuming food (of all varieties), or even products that bring enjoyment or pleasure or even pain I suppose. I feel that art, or really, the artworld is going to do what it has always done....create a new style or mode of creation that is either slightly or extremely different from previous styles or creations. I feel hopeful that people will always be way more creative than animals, and because of this, I have faith.

MakeShift's electrofunk sound decidedly begs you to look back at bands like Kraftwerk, the vanguard to electro's contemporary conventions. This is not to say the music is a throw back, or a pastiche of Afrika Bambaataa's "Planet Rock," or Hashim's "Al-Naafiysh (The Soul," MakeShift's music takes the organic, afro-beat influenced sound into the avante garde with his Reason generated sounds and sequences.
